Meeting the guests

A Chinese trade delegation will expect to be received by the managing director upon arrival at Copenhagen Airport – regardless of whether the Danish company is situated in Jutland or not.

Even though it may seem a bit exceptional the Danish company should, as a minimum, send a representative to the airport to receive the guests and also to lead them to the domestic flight. If a Chinese interpreter is hired for this job it will leave a good first-hand impression with the tired business travellers.

When greeting it is important to first shake hands with the highest-in-rank representative among the delegation and then move down the line of people in order of precedence. In some cases the highest-in-rank representative may seem to have a somewhat pompous attitude, seen from a European point of view.

When driving by car with your Chinese guests it is important to note, that sitting in the back seat of the car is regarded as more prestigious than the front seat. This is why it is important to pick up the guests in a car with 4 doors – and not a smaller car with only 2 doors!
Chinese guests often evaluate the reputation of the company and the status of the employees on the basis of the look of the car – and referring to expensive taxes on cars or other problems usually does not work in this situation.
